The Magic of Tadelakt: Morocco's Ancient Plaster Technique
November 19, 2023

What is Tadelakt?
Tadelakt is a traditional Moroccan wall surfacing technique that creates a smooth, soft, and waterproof finish. The word 'tadelakt' means 'to rub in' or 'to massage' in Berber, and that's exactly what the process involves. It's a meticulous, labor-intensive craft that transforms a simple wall into a work of art.
The Process: Earth, Stone, and Soap
The technique uses a unique lime plaster, indigenous to the Marrakech region. The plaster is applied in several thin layers and then polished with a river stone. This polishing process compresses the plaster, making it incredibly dense and durable. Finally, an olive oil soap solution is applied to the surface. A chemical reaction between the soap and the lime creates a waterproof membrane, giving Tadelakt its signature sheen and water-repellent properties.
Modern Applications
Traditionally used in hammams (Turkish baths) and riads, Tadelakt is now being adopted by contemporary designers for its organic, seamless beauty. It's a perfect choice for bathrooms, kitchens, and accent walls, bringing a touch of Moroccan soul and a timeless elegance to modern spaces.
